Val Thorens is located in the French Alps, specifically in the Tarentaise Valley in Savoie. This purpose-built resort is at an altitude of 2300m, resulting in exceptional snow quality and reliability. The resort is the highest in Europe and is part of the largest linked ski area in the world, the Three Valleys, with over 600km of runs supported by an excellent lift system. Val Thorens is part of the Belleville valley which is connected to the other ski resorts of Les Menuires and Saint Martin, whilst also covering the slopes between Val Thorens and Orielle – otherwise known as the fourth valley which includes the highest point of the whole Three Valleys lift network, the Sommet des 3 Valleys at 3230m. From the center of Val Thorens you can also access Meribel, 1400m below, and from there two lifts away is Courchevel.
The village is a pedestrianized zone, meaning it is car free and access to all shops and activities is within walking distance. Free shuttle buses which circulate the resort nearly every 30 minutes makes getting around even easier and connects to the nearby villages of Saint Martin and Des Menuires. It is centered around the Place de Caron, a main street that is lined with shops, boutiques, restaurants and bars. The apres ski scene is lively and there are extensive options for entertainment to suit all needs.
Val Thorens is known for having some of Europe’s highest apres ski establishments and the options will for sure keep you entertained, no matter what vibe you are looking for.
One of the most infamous venues of the area is located at the very top of the Plein Sud chairlift. La Folie Douce claims to be the highest and hottest open-air club in Europe, featuring a huge open terrace, thus offering stunning views of Alpine scenery.
The 360 bar is perfectly located on the pistes of Val Thorens and tends to attract mostly crowds of younger ages. The bar keeps its lively atmosphere from midday until the early hours of the morning. Opening its doors in 1986, Le Malaysia has been the ultimate place to party ever since! Being of the biggest nightclubs in the Alps, Le Malaysia has hosted some of the most famous DJs in the world and it’s the place where you can let loose and party the night away.La Maison restaurant, is located in the heart of the resort and offers breathtaking views of the mountains from its terrace. The Face West Café is arguably one of the more popular restaurants in Val Thorens, due to its consistently excellent food. For a more refined dining experience, a visit to Le Diamant Noir restaurant will not disappoint. Located at the top of Val Thorens, specifically inside the Hotel Kohinor, the restaurant offers panoramic views of the resort and the surrounding mountains.
Beginners will feel at ease at the Rond Point des Pistes, as it’s a mainly flat area with small inclines – perfect for first timers and learners. Additionally, the Belleville valley has 5 different nursery ski areas covering the area between the Roc, Cascades and the 2 Lac lifts. There you may take advantage of the magic carpets which are free of charge. The best thing about Val Thorens is that it has gentle pistes that connect to the different areas of the valley, thus giving skiers who are building up their confidence, a variety of runs to practice on.
Intermediates will find Val Thorens to be a paradise, as its extensive linked ski area offers a great range of runs to practice and perfect their technique on. Some red runs worth mentioning are the ones at Coraia which start at 3,230m and offers one of the best views in the Alps, as well as the ones in Funitel, Grand Fond and Cime de Caron. The fourth valley of Orielle is also not to be missed.
For skiers of expert level, the vast area of Val Thorens and the linked Three Valleys region will not disappoint. With access to three different glaciers and four different summits, there is an abundance of steep, challenging runs and many off-piste opportunities. Generally, the local slopes around Val Thorens are of easy and intermediate level although there are 8 black runs, out of which the most challenging is the 3km run down from the Cime de Caron lift.The slopes around the Bouchet lift, in the fourth valley of Orielle are wide, perfect for a speedy descent, while the Point de la Masse has a number of trickier black runs.
