The resort of Crans Montana is located in the heart of the Swiss Alps, above Sierre, and was originally two separate villages who joined together as one in the 1960s. Both villages are easily accessed by the funicular railway from the valley town of Sierre. The area has many natural advantages and the surrounding views of the Matterhorn and Mont Blanc are truly breathtaking.
Crans Montana is known for its extensive history in winter sports and for hosting many World Alpine Skiing championships and FIS World Cup events.
The ski area consists of 140km of pistes spread across its four different sectors – Crans, Montana, Barzettes-Violettes and Aminona. Access between the four areas is easy as each has their own respective base area gondola lift, while there is also a free ski bus service that connects the base terminals of these four lifts.
The resort itself is known to be the perfect location for a family vacation due to the wide range of entertainment options. Children and non-skiers will never get bored as there are many activities and sports to participate in besides skiing.
Take a stroll along Rue du Prado, an open-air shopping center with luxury brand shops and high end boutiques lining the street. Wellbeing is also favored in Crans Montana, with many spa facilities and natural therapy centers offering relaxing and attentive services – perfect after a long day of activities.
The number of quality restaurants is impressive, and there are many styles to choose between – from family-run mountain huts to Michelin awarded establishments. The après night scene is lively and vivid with bars and clubs and there is even a casino for those who are feeling lucky.
The positive aspect of the apres ski nightlife in Crans Montana is that it is spread out between the two villages. Both have a lot to offer individually, although the bars and clubs in Crans are more popular for the older, richer crowd whilst Montana tends to be favored amongst the younger ones, as it is more affordable and has a livelier atmosphere.
At an altitude of 2.220m, you can only imagine the exceptional 360 views that Cry d’Er club has to offer! A truly unique meeting spot as the venue offers nearly everything you might need after a long day of activities. The restaurant La Table, has indoor and outdoor seating and serves exquisite Italian cuisine. The other restaurant is Atelier Self, with the terrace seating giving you unique views, all whilst you taste traditional dishes made with local products.
Located at 2006m, the Amadeus bar is the perfect place to unwind and truly appreciate your surroundings. You can lay back on a lounge chair, with a beer in one hand and a burger in the other, and savor the mesmerizing view of the forty or so peaks stretching over 4000m in front of you.
A venue that offers luxury service and unique cuisine, it is no wonder why L’Ours restaurant has managed to earn its own Michelin star. The chef has remained true to his Provincial roots and he carefully follows seasons in order to prepare mouthwatering meals with local products.
During the winter months, the Crans golf course transforms into ‘Snow Island’, an area designed for children and absolute beginners. There are gentle fairways and magic carpets perfect for those who are just getting the hang of things. For the more progressive novices, in the area of Cry d’Er, there are plenty of ski schools and instructors to guide you accordingly, as well as many blue runs with t-bar lifts to ease into.
Intermediates will feel the most catered to, as there are plenty of red and harder blues to occupy them. Worth mentioning is the 11km long run down from the Plaine Morte glacier at 3000m, and descends approximately 1500m down to Les Barzettes. Additionally, you can test out your skills and speed on the World Cup downhill course, a thrilling experience.
For a skier that is of advanced level, there aren’t that many black runs per say, although the ones that exist are quite challenging. The most demanding but equally as stimulating has to be the 4.5km Toula descent. Fortunately, there are many off-piste itineraries you may explore with a guide – thus experiencing a different sensation of freedom.
The Crans Montana snowpark is considered to be one of the best in the French speaking part of Switzerland, covering over 100.000m2 and featuring the only Olympic half-pipe in the Valais Alps. Freestyle fans and experienced snowboarders will thoroughly enjoy the many features of the park such as rails, boxes, jumps and many more, while an airbag and an "easy snowpark" section enables beginner skiers and snowboarders to experience the pleasures of freestyle.
